Second-Half Surge Decides Big 12 Opener
DJ Lagway orchestrated the decisive stretch of the game, throwing two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to help the Baylor Bears secure a 23-13 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes. The win improves Baylor’s record to 3-1, while Colorado drops to 2-2 in the Big 12 standings.
The contest began with defensive struggles for both offenses. Colorado struck first when Elliott Arnold kicked a 24-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead into the second period. Baylor responded in the second quarter, tying the game at 3-3 on a 37-yard field goal by Rhett Armstrong before taking the lead with 7 minutes remaining in the half.
Lagway connected with Gavin Freeman on a 3-yard touchdown pass, giving the Bears a 10-3 advantage heading into halftime.
Scoring Plays Define Tight Contest
The third quarter saw both teams trade field goals. Rhett Armstrong extended Baylor’s lead to 13-3 with a 27-yard kick. However, Colorado began to chip away at the deficit when Elliott Arnold nailed a 46-yard field goal, making the score 13-6 at the break of the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter proved to be the turning point. Colorado tied the game at 13-13 when Isaac Wilson found Joseph Williams on a 17-yard touchdown pass. The momentum shifted back to Waco shortly after.
Lagway connected with Jadon Porter on a 33-yard touchdown pass, restoring Baylor’s lead at 20-13. To seal the victory, Rhett Armstrong kicked a game-clinching 54-yard field goal, finalizing the score at 23-13.
