A full practice is a welcome entry on an injury ledger, but it is not a completed rotation. Max Christie returned to the Mavericks’ full Tuesday session after resting during Friday’s exhibition finale in Atlanta. Before the day was over, Caleb Martin had been ruled out because of a right-thumb sprain and Jett Howard had been tagged questionable with right-calf tightness.
That is the real shape of Dallas’ latest roster update: one perimeter possibility came back into the room while two others became less certain. Christie’s participation matters. It does not guarantee a start, establish a minutes allotment or prove that every physical concern has vanished. He was simply able to complete the work Tuesday, which is useful information and nothing more.
Martin’s change is clearer. The wing appeared in 58 games last season, starting 12, and averaged fewer than four points with 1.4 assists, with rebounds averaging two-and-a-half per game and minutes a little under 15 per night. Those modest numbers should not obscure his roster value.
A team does not need every rotation player to be a featured scorer; it needs enough playable bodies to preserve structure when the stars sit or possessions become untidy. Martin’s thumb problem removes one of those bodies from the immediate calculation.
Howard’s status is more fluid. He was initially absent from the Tuesday update after an illness, then appeared on the later NBA injury report as questionable with the calf issue. That sequence makes him a decision for Wednesday’s opener, not a confirmed scratch.
Dallas also had Tarik Biberovic miss Tuesday’s practice and remain out with right-heel bursitis. Dereck Lively II is unavailable after right-foot surgery, while Santi Aldama participated only partially and remains listed out following right-knee surgery.
The numbers on the ledger matter because Dallas is trying to make its possessions less dependent on emergency creation. May’s Tuesday emphasis was practical: enter actions sooner, make the first catch cleanly, use quick outlets and advance the ball by passing.
Christie’s full session gives the Mavericks another player who may be able to help meet that standard, but it does not predetermine whether he will start, close or simply provide depth.
That distinction becomes important with Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving sharing the offensive burden. Flagg acknowledged Tuesday that Dallas went 1-3 in preseason and that the lineup experiments remain unfinished.
