Retractable Technologies, a manufacturer of safety medical devices based in Little Elm, Texas, is eliminating approximately 16% of its staff. The company stated that this reduction, which affects about 36 positions, is intended to lower annual overhead costs by $2.2 million and increase domestic production capabilities.
According to a company release, the workforce was estimated at 227 employees in early 2025. Of the roles being cut, 58% are in manufacturing or manufacturing support, while the remainder are in sales and support functions. Retractable indicated it will allocate an estimated $122,000 for one-time separation payments to the affected workers.
The company, which has historically produced most of its products in China, cited the financial impact of tariffs on imports from that country as a primary reason for the shift. A statement from Retractable noted that while expanding domestic manufacturing reduces the negative financial effects of these tariffs, the company remains dependent on Chinese imports for items it cannot produce with its current equipment.
Retractable produces several safety medical products, including the VanishPoint, Patient Safe, and EasyPoint needle. These devices are designed to prevent needlestick injuries by retracting the needle directly from the patient.
This workforce reduction follows similar moves in the medical device sector. Two months prior, Integra LifeSciences cut 65 jobs at its Princeton, New Jersey, facility following a recall of wound and burn devices. Additionally, Medtronic announced in February that it planned to separate 81 employees at its Northridge, California, diabetes facility as part of an effort to spin off its diabetes unit.
