Turning Point and Early Lead

The Toronto Blue Jays established control early, but the Houston Astros mounted a late surge that tested the home team’s defense. Kazuma Okamoto provided the initial spark with a 388-foot home run to left-center field in the second inning, tying the game at 1-1 after the Astros had taken a 1-0 lead in the first. That home run was the only long ball of the contest, a critical swing that kept Toronto within striking distance despite an early deficit.

Houston’s offense was active in the opening frame. Paredes singled to left, driving in Peña to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage, with Alvarez advancing to second. The Blue Jays responded in the fourth inning when Guerrero Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Giménez to score and put Toronto ahead 2-1. The lead held until the sixth inning, when Altuve singled to right, scoring Alvarez to tie the game at 2-2.

Bullpen Seals the Victory

Toronto regained the lead in the seventh inning. Straw hit a sacrifice fly to left, bringing Varsho home, while Okamoto moved to third base. The Blue Jays extended their advantage in the eighth inning when Kirk hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Springer to make it 4-2. That would prove to be the final score.

The Houston bullpen struggled to contain the Blue Jays' offense after Brown’s outing. Hunter Brown pitched 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out four. AJ Blubaugh followed with 2.0 innings, giving up two hits and one earned run. Enyel De Los Santos took the loss after pitching 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. Bryan King and Logan VanWey also appeared, with VanWey allowing three hits in one inning.

For Toronto, Dylan Cease provided a strong start, pitching 5.2 innings and striking out eight batters while allowing two earned runs. He was supported by a relief corps that held Houston scoreless for the final two innings. Braydon Fisher earned the win after pitching 1.1 scoreless innings. Tyler Rogers recorded the save with a perfect 1.0-inning frame, and Louis Varland closed the game with another scoreless inning, striking out one batter.

Final Notes

The game was played at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, with an attendance of 42,273. The victory improved Toronto’s record to 39-39, while Houston fell to 37-43.
