Dominant First Half Sets Tone
The Houston Cougars established control early, leveraging a balanced offensive attack to build an insurmountable lead before halftime. Conner Weigman was the catalyst, contributing to six of Houston’s first eight scoring plays through both the air and ground game.
Houston opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run by Weigman, followed by a 22-yard pass from Weigman to Koby Young. The Cougars extended their advantage in the second quarter, capitalizing on Weigman’s dual-threat ability.
He added another rushing touchdown from 1 yard out and connected with Traville Frederick Jr. on a 2-yard pass to push the lead to 28-14 at halftime.
Despite Georgia Southern fighting back to tie the game at 14-14 in the second period, Houston’s offense maintained its rhythm. The Eagles’ Max Johnson threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Alex Taylor and led Ty Cummings for a 2-yard run, but Houston answered immediately to regain the lead.
Steady Offensive Output Continues
The third quarter saw both teams trade scores, but Houston maintained its double-digit cushion. Weigman found Trent Walker on a 23-yard touchdown pass, extending the Cougars’ lead to 35-14. Georgia Southern responded with another 23-yard strike from Johnson to Taylor, bringing the score to 35-21.
In the fourth quarter, Houston sealed the victory with two more scoring drives. Weigman connected with Amare Thomas on an 11-yard touchdown pass to make it 42-21. Georgia Southern added a late 5-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to River Helms, finalizing the 42-28 score.
