A Midland Rockhounds baseball player sustained a serious injury during a game against the Frisco Roughriders on Tuesday, requiring spinal surgery. The incident occurred in the bottom of the third inning when outfielder Ryan Lasko collided head-first with a teammate while attempting to catch a ball. Lasko, who is a prospect in the Oakland Athletics organization, did not move after the impact and was treated by medical staff at the stadium before being transported to a hospital.
Medical reports indicate that Lasko suffered a fracture involving the C6 and C7 vertebrae. He underwent spinal decompression and stabilization surgery overnight. The Athletics organization stated that the player is currently in stable condition.
Oakland Athletics General Manager David Forst communicated with Lasko’s mother, Patti, to convey the organization’s support. Forst noted that the entire system is keeping the family in their thoughts and prayers. He expressed encouragement regarding the medical updates provided by the treating physician and affirmed that the team’s medical resources would remain dedicated to supporting Lasko’s recovery.
The Frisco Roughriders, who are located approximately 7 miles east of Little Elm, released a message on social media expressing their sympathy toward Lasko and the Rockhounds organization. Following the conclusion of the game, players from both teams formed a prayer circle.
