Umeshkumar Thakkar, a 58-year-old rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, died on Monday while delivering mail in Little Elm, Texas. The incident occurred during a heat advisory with temperatures reaching 102 degrees Fahrenheit that day and climbing to 108 degrees on subsequent days. Thakkar had been employed by the postal service since 2022.
Surveillance footage shows Thakkar’s postal vehicle stationary near Thornhill Lane and Graystone Drive with hazard lights flashing around 12:20 p.m. A 911 call was received at approximately 2 p.m. Firefighters performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene, but Thakkar was declared dead.
Authorities have not yet released an official cause of death or determined when he lost consciousness during the roughly 100 minutes the vehicle remained stopped.
Neighbors described the scene to local media. Ximena Ayala reported seeing fire trucks and about five patrol cars, along with someone inspecting the vehicle while appearing distressed on a phone call. Manny Ortiz told Fox 4 that he found emergency crews on his lawn after returning from the gym, noting that the postman had passed out.
Ortiz expressed concern about working conditions in the extreme heat.
Thakkar’s vehicle appears to be an older Grumman Long Life Vehicle, which lacks air conditioning. Workers have previously documented interior temperatures in these vehicles exceeding 120 degrees. Thakkar is the third postal carrier in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to die on duty from heat-related causes in just over three years.
