Hawks rally past Spurs 123-116 in preseason game

Asa Newell scored 11 points in the last six minutes and the Atlanta Hawks rallied past the San Antonio Spurs 123-116 in a preseason game Thursday at Frost Bank Center.

San Antonio, playing its first exhibition of the fall, opened with a 39-20 first quarter and at one point led by 23. Atlanta scored 42 in the second quarter to get within 69-62 at halftime and trailed 95-93 entering the fourth.

After a 102-102 tie, the Spurs went back in front 109-108 on a pair of Carter Bryant free throws with 6:01 left. Atlanta answered with 13 straight points, nine of them from Newell, to lead 121-109 with under two minutes to play. David Jones Garcia hit a late 3-pointer for San Antonio, but the gap was too large.

Key performances

Newell finished with 16 points in 14 minutes, making five of eight shots and five of six free throws. Kingston Flemings scored 15 with five assists and three steals. Dyson Daniels had 13 points and 11 rebounds, the most of any player in the game.

Dylan Harper led the Spurs with 16 points and four assists. Stephon Castle and Jones Garcia scored 14 apiece, and Victor Wembanyama had nine points and six rebounds in 17 minutes.

San Antonio committed 22 turnovers, which Atlanta converted into 30 points. The crowd was 18,354. Preseason games are not counted in the regular-season standings.
