Baylor University's football defense is gearing up for a major transformation with the appointment of Joe Klanderman as the new coordinator. Klanderman, who previously directed a top 30 defense at Kansas State, steps in as the Bears have faced challenges, giving up an average of 30.8 points and more than 399.9 yards per game since 2023.
Klanderman's defensive strategy incorporates a 3-3-5 formation, designed to enhance versatility and create confusion for opposing quarterbacks. This setup includes three defensive linemen tasked with absorbing blocks, allowing linebackers to chase down plays effectively.
This new scheme aims to bolster Baylor's performance in crucial moments, especially in red-zone situations and during third-down attempts. Known for his successful track record at Kansas State, Klanderman has also utilized the transfer portal to strengthen the Bears' defensive lineup.
Positional flexibility is a key feature of Klanderman's system, which employs hybrid safeties and linebackers to combat the spread offenses common in the Big 12. Players like Travion Barnes, Daniel Cobbs, and Colby McCalister are expected to excel in this adaptable framework.
