A defense attorney representing former TCU football player Jacob Fields asserts that the coaching staff was aware of rising tensions during practice prior to a locker room fight on August 13. Fields is facing an aggravated assault charge for allegedly injuring teammate Dozie Ezukanma, who required hospitalization for three days due to a brain bleed.
Attorney Coby DuBose disputes the arrest warrant affidavit's claims that Fields sucker-punched Ezukanma, stating that Fields approached him to greet him before the altercation. DuBose emphasized that Fields had previously communicated his frustrations about rough treatment during practices, asserting that he had informed the coaching staff about being subjected to cheap shots.
DuBose contends that the TCU coaching staff failed to address the situation adequately, which could have prevented the incident. He described the lead-up to the fight as involving excessive aggression, including instances of spitting and illegal hits. Supporting DuBose's claims, Fields’ agent, Phillip “Red” Miller, indicated that unnecessary aggression was evident in practices.
In response, a source within the TCU football program disputed these allegations, while athletic director Mike Buddie maintained that the coaching staff managed the situation appropriately. The investigation's details and the coaching staff's actions continue to unfold.
