The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Seattle Seahawks 17-7 in their opening preseason matchup, though the victory was marred by an injury to running back Phil Mafah. Mafah sustained a chest injury during the contest and was initially considered questionable to return before being ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Fortunately, early assessments indicate that the injury is not severe. Mafah currently ranks third on the Cowboys' depth chart, behind Javonte Williams and Jaydon Blue. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer commented on Mafah's status, saying he spoke with him and believes the team emerged from the game with only minor injuries.
In addition to Mafah, safety Justin Barron also took a hit during the game. The team plans to evaluate the players further once they return to Oxnard for treatment.
Mafah, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, is competing for a position on the final 53-man roster after a difficult rookie year that saw him play just one game, where he recorded five carries for 18 yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile, veteran running back Malik Davis showcased his abilities against the Seahawks, achieving seven carries for 39 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. As roster cuts approach, the Cowboys will continue to monitor player health, especially that of Mafah.
