The Dallas Cowboys have released cornerback Josh Butler after spending three seasons with the team. Butler, who had previously participated in two spring football leagues before joining the Cowboys in 2023, shared his disappointment and pride regarding the decision.

In a social media post, Butler noted his defensive achievements, stating that he never allowed a touchdown during his time with the Cowboys, whether in preseason or regular season, and did not permit a pass over 20 yards. He also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to football after a four-year break.

During the preseason, Butler recorded six tackles and demonstrated strong defensive capabilities in three games. In total, he played in six games over three seasons, accumulating 26 tackles, five pass deflections, and one sack. Unfortunately, an ACL injury sustained in 2024 sidelined him for the entire 2023 season, limiting his participation in 2025.

Although he showed promise, Butler faced intense competition for the cornerback position, which contributed to his release. The Cowboys have not dismissed the possibility of re-signing him for their practice squad, as he has proven to be a dependable depth player when healthy.

As the team evaluates its roster, it remains uncertain if Butler will join another NFL team or return to the Cowboys in a different role. Further updates on his future are pending.
