The Dallas Cowboys have released quarterback Joe Milton. This decision was made on Monday after he joined the team in April 2025, following a trade with the New England Patriots that involved a fifth-round draft pick. Milton had been in competition for the backup quarterback role against Sam Howell throughout the offseason.

Earlier that day, the Cowboys added running back Emari Demercado, who was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs. This move required the Cowboys to release Milton to fit Demercado onto the 53-man roster.

During the preseason of 2026, Milton participated in three games, completing 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards, achieving three touchdowns without any interceptions. He also rushed 12 times for 14 yards, scoring one rushing touchdown.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer had previously expressed confidence in both Milton and Howell as potential backup quarterbacks. He recalled a conversation with Milton that highlighted the quarterback's self-assurance. Schottenheimer acknowledged the difficulties of mastering the team’s intricate offensive system, which demands a deep understanding from quarterbacks.

Milton had noted his growing comfort with the Cowboys' offense after a full season and a second training camp, emphasizing the significance of grasping the playbook and executing plays accurately. With Milton's release, the Cowboys' quarterback roster now includes Dak Prescott and Sam Howell.

Milton is now subject to waivers, and if he is not claimed, he may have the chance to join the Cowboys' practice squad.
