Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver for TCU, spent three days in the hospital due to a brain bleed, a concussion, and other injuries after being allegedly assaulted by teammate Jacob Fields. The incident took place on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
Reports indicate that Fields, dissatisfied with Ezukanma's practice performance, punched him in the head while he was seated and looking at his phone. Witnesses stated that Fields then kicked Ezukanma in the back of the head, resulting in Ezukanma losing consciousness. He later recalled being in the training room and asking teammates about the incident.
Ezukanma experienced severe headaches and ringing in his ears, prompting his hospitalization where scans confirmed a brain bleed. He was later transferred to the ICU for further monitoring, with one scan indicating that the hematoma had increased in size. He was discharged on August 16, also suffering from a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18 and subsequently charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, being released on a $50,000 bond. Fields expressed remorse in a text to TCU police, admitting to making an emotional decision and offering to pay for Ezukanma's hospital expenses.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes remarked on the incident, noting it was uncharacteristic for both the team and Fields. Ezukanma, a product of Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was anticipated to be a starting wide receiver for the season, with TCU's next game against Grambling scheduled for September 12.
