BJ Edwards, who previously played for the SMU Mustangs, has decided to join the Oklahoma Sooners. This commitment was reported by Joe Tipton of On3. Due to a five-for-five temporary injunction, Edwards is eligible for an additional season of college basketball, benefiting the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards spent three seasons at SMU in Dallas after transferring from the University of Tennessee, where he played just 14 games. During his time with the Mustangs, he played under two head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield, and became a key player for the team.
Last season was particularly notable for him, as he averaged 12.7 points per game, alongside 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists, while shooting 47.4% from the field. His defensive skills earned him All-Conference defensive team honors in the ACC, with averages of 2.4 steals in the 2024-2025 season and 2.3 steals in the 2025-2026 season.
Despite SMU's interest in keeping him, Edwards opted to play for head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are looking to strengthen their team after a 21-16 season and missing out on the NCAA Tournament. Edwards' addition is expected to enhance the program's competitiveness for the upcoming winter season.
