Malik Davis will miss the season after injuring his hip during Friday’s practice at The Star in Frisco, the Cowboys said. The outdoor workout was non-contact and only a little more involved than a walk-through. Davis was carted off the field, had surgery later that night and was placed on injured reserve for the season.
Davis had won the No. 2 running back job behind Javonte Williams after competing for it through most of August. His training camp and preseason performances led the Cowboys to expect him to contribute against the Giants on Sunday.
Stephen Jones, the team’s chief operating officer, told 105.3 The Fan that Davis and the Cowboys were disappointed, adding that Davis had earned the position through his work and that other players would have to fill the role.
The Cowboys signed veteran Emari Demercado for running back depth and special-teams help. Israel Abanikanda, who is on the practice squad, also could get more opportunities. Dallas could elevate Abanikanda for the game or place him on the active roster.
Davis, an undrafted free agent who joined Dallas in 2022, had 252 rushing yards and two touchdowns while backing up Williams last season. He appeared in 12 games as a rookie and gained 161 yards.
