Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Marist Liufau is scheduled for surgery due to a fractured forearm, which will keep him sidelined for several weeks. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that the injury took place during a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints when Liufau was involved in a tackle in the first quarter.
Schottenheimer commended Liufau's competitive nature, saying, "What a great competitor. He'll be back." Liufau, who was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft after playing at Notre Dame, has been a consistent presence for the Cowboys, participating in all 34 games over the last two seasons.
Entering his third year, Liufau has shifted from inside linebacker to outside linebacker, working under defensive coordinator Christian Parker. He has expressed appreciation for the support from his teammates and coaches during this transition. Last season, he significantly increased his role in special teams, contributing 75% of the snaps, a rise from 35% in his rookie year.
Schottenheimer noted the impact of Liufau's absence, stating that while losing him is challenging, it is a part of the sport. The team will proceed with the surgery and adjust accordingly, as Liufau plays a vital role across all special teams phases.
