In 2025, the Cowboys faced challenges under former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, finishing at the bottom of the NFL for opponent passing yards and points allowed. They were also 30th in total yards allowed and tied for 22nd in sacks. This contrasts with their performance in earlier seasons under Dan Quinn, who has since taken over as head coach for the Washington Commanders.
With Christian Parker now leading the defense, the Cowboys have adopted a new mindset and strategy. Williams emphasized that their daily practices against a strong offense have played a crucial role in their defensive improvement. He acknowledged that while there has been significant progress, certain areas still require refinement.
In August, the Cowboys extended Williams' contract for three years at $105.9 million, positioning him among the highest-paid interior defensive linemen. In the previous season, he achieved 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception, and 53 combined tackles over 15 games, earning a commendable overall grade from Pro Football Focus.
The Cowboys have also strengthened their defense with key signings, including safety Jalen Thompson and cornerback Cobie Durant, along with veteran linebacker Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. They further enhanced their lineup in the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Malachi Lawrence.
