Southern Methodist University has announced the appointment of Derek Gossler as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Revenue Generation. This move is part of the university's strategy to boost its competitiveness in the Atlantic Coast Conference by enhancing revenue generation, a vital aspect of contemporary college athletics.
Gossler brings over 15 years of expertise in fundraising, ticket sales, and commercial strategy. He previously held the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development and Chief Revenue Officer at the University of Wyoming, where he successfully raised cash and pledges through the Cowboy Joe Club and set records in premium seating and ticket sales.
Before his tenure at Wyoming, Gossler made significant contributions at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he played a key role in achieving five years of record fundraising. His background also includes a notable stint at Arizona State University, where he was part of a major fundraising campaign that raised $86 million and helped establish the men's hockey program through substantial donations.
With Gossler's extensive experience across various athletic departments, he is well-equipped to meet SMU's demands as it operates in one of the country's largest and most affluent markets. His focus will be on maximizing revenue through innovative approaches and strengthening connections with fans, supporters, and corporate partners.
Gossler's hiring reflects SMU's ongoing commitment to enhancing its athletic programs nationally as the Mustangs transition into the ACC. Specific plans and initiatives for revenue generation at SMU have yet to be revealed.
