The Houston Texans have brought back defensive tackle Junior Tafuna to their practice squad, as confirmed on social media on September 2, 2026. This re-signing follows Tafuna's previous stint with the Texans during his rookie season after he went undrafted in 2025.
Tafuna was waived by the Texans on August 5 and was subsequently claimed by the New York Jets the next day. However, he was released during the Jets' roster cuts. Now returning to Houston, Tafuna is anticipated to provide additional depth to a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
During his time at the University of Utah, Tafuna accumulated a total of 108 tackles, recorded 7.5 sacks, achieved 15 tackles for loss, and made three fumble recoveries, along with two interceptions and one forced fumble over four years. Analysts have pointed out that although Tafuna may not possess all the ideal characteristics sought in interior defenders, his athleticism could attract teams.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein noted that he is tenacious at the point of contact and capable of handling double-teams, but mentioned that his margin for error is narrow.
