The Houston Texans have decided to suspend contract discussions with quarterback C.J. Stroud once the regular season kicks off. General manager Nick Caserio indicated that if an agreement is not finalized before the team's first game against Buffalo on September 13, negotiations will be deferred until the following offseason.
Stroud, the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, has had his fifth-year option exercised, ensuring his contract with the Texans extends through 2027. Although Caserio had suggested the possibility of an extension prior to the season, no deal is currently in place.
At 24 years old, Stroud holds a career record of 28 wins and 18 losses, having guided the Texans to playoff appearances in each of his initial three seasons. He was awarded the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and recorded a career-high completion percentage of 64% in 2025, contributing to a 12-5 season and a spot in the divisional playoffs.
Despite these achievements, he encountered difficulties during the playoffs, including five interceptions in a loss to New England by a score of 28-16. Further information regarding future negotiations has not yet been made available.
