In their previous two preseason contests, the starters had minimal playing time. Quarterback C.J. Stroud and running back Woody Marks were on the field for just one drive against the Las Vegas Raiders, while the starting offensive line has only played two drives total in both games. The starting defense has yet to see action this preseason.
Ryans stated that the choice to rest the starters is a deliberate one, as the team is pleased with their performance during the joint practice. The decision may also stem from injuries affecting key players, including wide receiver Jayden Higgins and offensive tackle Braden Smith, which could have contributed to the choice to avoid risking further injuries.
As the Texans gear up for the regular season, backups, including quarterbacks Davis Mills and Brett Rypien, will likely lead the team against the Panthers. This matchup will provide a last chance for players to demonstrate their abilities prior to the Texans finalizing their 53-man roster.
The Texans’ season opener against the Buffalo Bills will follow, where starters are expected to make their first appearance of the season.
