Dominant Pitching Performance

Joey Volchko delivered a masterful pitching performance for the Georgia Bulldogs, striking out 15 batters over nine innings to secure the victory. Volchko allowed just four hits and one walk while preventing any runs, finishing with an 11-2 record. His ability to neutralize the Texas lineup was the defining feature of the contest at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.

Early Scoring Surge

The Bulldogs established an early lead in the first inning. R. Lujo homered to left field, driving in T. Phelps to give Georgia a 2-0 advantage. The scoring continued in the same frame when K. Branch reached base on a wild pitch by Texas pitcher Dylan Volantis. M. O'Shaughnessy scored from second, and after Branch advanced to second on a throwing error by catcher C. Tinney, K. Ishikawa scored from third, extending the lead to 4-0.

Texas Longhorns starter Dylan Volantis worked six and two-thirds innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out nine batters before taking the loss, dropping his record to 10-2. Brett Crossland pitched the seventh inning, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts. Michael Winter closed out the Texas relief efforts with a scoreless inning in the ninth.

Texas Responds

The Longhorns finally broke through in the fifth inning. A. Rodriguez reached third base on a throwing error by Volchko. E. Mendoza then singled to shallow right field, allowing Rodriguez to score and put Texas on the board for the first time, making the score 4-1.

Closing Out the Game

Georgia re-established its dominance in the seventh inning. R. Lujo doubled to deep left field, scoring T. Phelps to make it 5-1. D. Jackson advanced to third on the play. Two batters later, K. Ishikawa singled to shallow right, driving in both Jackson and Lujo to finalize the scoring at 7-1. The Bulldogs improved their record to 52-12, while the Longhorns fell to 45-14. The game drew an attendance of 25,002 spectators.
