Tate Sandell’s 47-yard field goal completed Oklahoma’s fourth-quarter comeback, lifting the Sooners to a 27-24 victory over Texas on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl. The kick came after the teams had traded fourth-quarter touchdowns and left Oklahoma with the final three points.
Texas controls the first half
Texas opened the scoring in the first period when Arch Manning found Cam Coleman for a 41-yard touchdown pass, giving the Longhorns a 7-0 lead after one quarter.
Oklahoma answered in the second period on Dakoda Fields’ 0-yard return of a blocked punt, with Sandell’s kick tying the game at 7-7. Texas regained the lead on Manning’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo, then extended it with Gianni Spetic’s 23-yard field goal. Texas led 17-7 at halftime.
Oklahoma rallies late
Sandell’s 53-yard field goal provided Oklahoma’s only points of the third period, cutting the deficit to 17-10. The Sooners then tied the game at 17-17 in the fourth when Lloyd Avant scored on a 2-yard run.
Texas went back in front when Peyton Bowen returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown, making it 24-17. Manning then connected with Jermaine Bishop Jr. for a 15-yard touchdown, and Spetic’s kick tied the game at 24-24.
