A Dallas-based nonprofit that uses running to support people in addiction recovery is holding its first race in Little Elm this month.
The Running for Renewal 5K and 1-Mile Family Walk/Run starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at 310 E. Eldorado Pkwy. Organizers call it the inaugural Little Elm edition of the event.
Who it supports
Running for Renewal works alongside treatment centers, sober living homes, 12-step programs, churches and other recovery groups, helping people build lasting recovery through physical fitness, accountability, faith, purpose and community, according to the organization. "We complement existing recovery programs; we don't replace them," the group said in its announcement.
The race is open to anyone: experienced runners, casual walkers, people in recovery and family members supporting someone who is. Organizers say the event is meant to support people affected by addiction, mental health challenges, trauma and grief, and to break the stigma surrounding addiction and mental health.
The nonprofit's founder and executive director is Anthony Ysasaga.
