Argyle ISD is interviewing candidates to become the first principal of Legacy High School, the new high school the fast-growing Denton County district plans to open in August 2027, Superintendent Courtney Carpenter announced Tuesday.

A recommendation is expected at the school board's meeting on Monday, Nov. 16, Carpenter said, according to the Cross Timbers Gazette. Once a principal is in place, the district plans to begin recruiting leaders for the new campus's athletics and fine arts programs.

"Our district leadership has worked diligently over the past two years preparing for the August 2027 opening of Legacy High School," Carpenter said in the announcement. She called those positions "vital" to starting full staffing for the campus when the spring semester begins.

Superintendent on her way out

The same announcement confirmed that Carpenter intends to leave Argyle ISD when the fall semester ends. She was recently named the lone finalist for superintendent of Glen Rose ISD.

Carpenter said the district's priorities and direction would not change while she finishes the semester. The district has not announced how it will pick her successor.

A district under pressure

The Gazette reported that Argyle ISD's plan for the new campus drew criticism, as did its land purchases. Carpenter's departure was announced soon after an October school board meeting at which a trustee resigned and left the meeting after criticizing district leadership, the paper said.

Argyle ISD's administration building is at 6701 Canyon Falls Road, and its board meetings are open to the public.
