Eight crashes on Denton County roads killed someone in September, out of 1,100 collisions the county recorded for the month, according to Texas Department of Transportation figures reported Monday by The Dallas Morning News.

That put Denton County third in the region for deadly wrecks, behind Dallas County with 17 and Tarrant County with 14. Collin County, despite logging 90 more crashes than Denton County, had only three that were deadly, the newspaper reported.

Across the 16 counties TxDOT counts as North Texas, there were 9,769 crashes last month, about 325 a day. That daily average was 61 higher than in August. Dallas County alone accounted for 3,278 crashes, more than a third of the regional total.

The region's 59 fatal crashes accounted for about 23% of all fatalities statewide for the month, the report said. Statewide, Texas recorded 41,803 collisions in September.

A few other points from the data:

  • About 60% of North Texas crashes in September were non-injury wrecks, where vehicles were damaged but no one was immediately hurt.
  • Kaufman and Navarro counties each had three fatal crashes; Ellis, Parker and Wise counties had two each.
  • Hood, Palo Pinto and Somervell counties recorded no fatal crashes.
  • TxDOT data showed no road rage collisions reported anywhere in Texas in September.

The figures cover all of Denton County and are not broken out by city in the report. Besides Dallas, Tarrant, Denton and Collin, the 16-county region takes in Ellis, Johnson, Parker, Rockwall and Wise counties, among others.
