Darrion Williams has signed with Texas Tech for the upcoming 2026-27 season, marking his return to the program after a year at NC State. Head coach Grant McCasland made the announcement regarding Williams’ signing.
Williams began his college journey at Nevada before spending two seasons with Texas Tech. His All-Big 12 First Team junior year in Lubbock during the 2024-25 season saw him average 15.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists, earning All-Big 12 First Team honors and helping the Red Raiders reach the Elite Eight in the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
Last season at NC State, he led the Wolfpack with an average of 14.0 points per game, alongside 151 rebounds, 92 assists, and 35 steals.
The opportunity for Williams to return stems from a recent U.S. District Court ruling in Colorado, which determined that players from the high school class of 2022 who have exhausted their fourth season of eligibility can compete for a fifth season. This decision has allowed Texas Tech to welcome Williams back, alongside another player, Stillwell, who was also signed under the same ruling.
For fans of Texas Tech, this means Williams is back in the conference. The ruling also highlights how courts are increasingly influencing eligibility rules in college sports, altering team rosters outside of traditional athletic timelines.
Texas Tech is set to begin its season in the fall following their previous success with Williams on the team.
