Clement’s 10th-inning homer lifts Blue Jays over Astros, 5-4

Clement changes it late

Ernie Clement supplied the decisive swing in the top of the 10th inning, homering to left for 391 feet with Urías aboard to give Toronto a two-run lead, and the Blue Jays held off the Houston Astros 5-4 on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, at Daikin Park in Houston.

Houston cut the gap in the bottom of the 10th when Alvarez singled to right, scoring Peña. Alvarez was out trying to stretch the hit to second, and Houston’s challenge of the call was upheld, leaving Toronto in front by the final margin.

Houston’s three-run third

The Astros did their scoring damage early in the bottom of the third. Altuve opened the scoring with a 401-foot homer to left, giving Houston a 1-0 lead.

Walker followed with a double to left that scored Varsho, and Wade Jr. singled to center to bring in Walker for a 3-0 Astros advantage. Toronto’s Jameson Taillon worked four innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

Blue Jays answer in the sixth

Toronto pulled even in the top of the sixth. Okamoto singled to center to score Straw, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Sánchez then homered to right for 398 feet, bringing in Okamoto and tying the game 3-3.

Hunter Brown went six innings for Houston, allowing three hits and three earned runs with two walks and eight strikeouts. Steven Okert, Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader each pitched one scoreless inning; Okert struck out one, Abreu struck out two and Hader struck out one.

Toronto bullpen closes it

Spencer Miles gave Toronto two innings with two hits, no earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Mason Fluharty added one inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts, and Tyler Rogers worked one inning with one hit, no earned runs and no walks.

Louis Varland (4-4) earned the win with one inning, no hits, no earned runs, no walks and one strikeout. Chase Lee recorded his first save after one inning with one hit, no earned runs and no walks.

Bennett Sousa (0-1) took the loss for Houston after one inning, allowing two hits and one earned run with no walks and one strikeout. The announced attendance was 27,751. Houston fell to 59-57, and Toronto improved to 54-61.
