Offensive Explosion in the Fifth

The Washington Nationals broke the game open with a decisive seven-run fifth inning, overwhelming the Houston Astros for an 8-2 victory at Nationals Park on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The offensive surge was spearheaded by CJ Abrams and Luis Garcia Jr., who both hit their 20th home runs of the season.

Washington took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning. Abrams drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field, followed by Garcia Jr. scoring on a double by Lile. The Nationals’ offense expanded their advantage significantly in the fourth. Garcia Jr. launched a 417-foot home run to right-center field, driving in two additional runs to make it 5-0.

The decisive blow came in the fifth inning. After Houston’s Diaz scored on a Matthews single to make it 5-1, Abrams homered to right-center field (415 feet) to extend the lead to 6-1. The inning continued with rapid-fire scoring: Lile scored on a groundout by Tena, and Crews scored on a sacrifice fly by Ruiz, pushing the score to 8-1. Houston managed to add a run in the eighth inning when Dezenzo scored on a throwing error by shortstop Abrams, making the final margin 8-2.

Griffin Dominates on the Mound

Washington starter Foster Griffin provided a stellar pitching performance to complement the offensive barrage. Griffin earned the win (10-2) by pitching seven innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out nine batters and issuing no walks. Orlando Ribalta and Justin Lawrence closed out the game, combining for two hitless innings with no earned runs allowed.

Houston’s starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti struggled significantly, taking the loss (7-5) after allowing eight earned runs on seven hits over four innings while walking six batters. Relief pitchers Alimber Santa, Nate Pearson, and Cristian Javier worked the final five innings, preventing any further damage despite the large deficit.
