The Town of Little Elm has announced targeted mosquito control treatments following the detection of West Nile Virus in two mosquito samples collected through its ongoing surveillance program. The positive samples were gathered from areas near 301 Main St. and 1647 Old Witt Rd.

To reduce the adult mosquito population and limit the potential spread of mosquito-borne illness, the Town has coordinated with a licensed mosquito control contractor. Spraying operations are scheduled for Monday, June 29, 2026, and Tuesday, June 30, 2026. Treatments will begin at 9 p.m. each night.

The contractor will apply Aqua Perm-X UL 30-30, an EPA-registered product designed for public health mosquito abatement. The product is applied as an ultra-low-volume mist and is commonly used throughout Texas and the United States. Residents in the treatment areas are encouraged to take specific precautions during these operations. Individuals should remain indoors when possible, bring pets inside, and close any open windows and doors. Residents may also choose to cover outdoor pet food, water bowls, and children's toys.

While the spraying helps reduce adult mosquitoes, the Town emphasizes that eliminating breeding sites remains the most effective long-term defense against West Nile Virus. Residents are encouraged to follow the "4 Ds" of mosquito prevention. This includes using EPA-approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Residents should wear long sleeves and long pants, especially during peak activity times. It is critical to drain standing water from flower pots, bird baths, gutters, and buckets. Finally, residents should limit outdoor activities during dusk and dawn.

The Town will continue monitoring mosquito activity throughout the community and will take additional measures as needed to protect public health. For more information about mosquito control and West Nile Virus prevention, residents can visit the Town's Mosquito Information page or the Denton County Public Health website.
