University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks remains suspended while he faces two criminal cases. His attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said he hopes Brooks will be allowed to attend classes while the cases are pending. Further details were not provided.
One case stems from an August dispute in northwest Harris County. Brooks is accused of damaging a door handle during a confrontation involving a woman and her sister, resulting in a criminal mischief charge. Family members said Brooks and the two women attended the same high school and grew up in Killeen. Harley also is from Killeen and attends Texas Southern University.
The other case includes an allegation of assault involving a pregnant person. Nariah Harley told the judge she wants prosecutors to drop that charge, saying police misunderstood what happened. She said an argument occurred in Brooks’ apartment last week, where he asked her several times to leave before carrying her outside after she refused.
Harley said Brooks called police because she would not exit. She identified Brooks as the father of her baby and said she does not consider herself a victim. She requested that every charge be dismissed so they could continue their lives.
Wasserstein said officers’ body-camera recordings and Brooks’ 911 call are expected to be reviewed.
