Baylor head coach Dave Aranda is set to enter the 2026 season under intense scrutiny, as another losing record could jeopardize his position. His return to the program was somewhat unexpected after the athletic director's resignation late last season raised concerns about his future.
As Aranda embarks on his seventh season, he will integrate new talent, including quarterback DJ Lagway, who transferred from Florida, and a fresh set of receivers. He will also work with a new defensive coordinator, Joe Klanderman, who previously held the same role at Kansas State.
Aranda's overall coaching record is 36-37, following a disappointing 5-7 finish last year, which included a troubling three-game losing streak.
The Bears have faced difficulties since their standout 2021 season, which featured a remarkable 12 victories and a Big 12 championship. Since then, their performance has dipped to a record of 22-28, with their only winning season being 8-5 in 2024.
Last season, the team struggled defensively, conceding an average of 32.6 points per game and committing a staggering 24 turnovers, the most in the Power Four.
Despite the departure of leading rusher Bryson Washington to Auburn, Baylor's running back unit remains strong. Caden Knighten, who gained 469 yards last season, and Dawson Pendergrass, returning from injury, are anticipated to play significant roles. However, the team faces challenges in the receiving corps, having lost their top five receivers from last season.
