Turning Point

James Wood’s grand slam in the fifth inning shifted the momentum entirely, providing the decisive spark that propelled the Washington Nationals to a 12-11 victory over the Houston Astros. The four-run blast, which traveled 446 feet to center field, capped a rapid scoring sequence that left the Astros’ bullpen unable to contain the offensive surge. Wood’s homer, which also scored Crews, Young, and Nuñez, turned a tight contest into a commanding lead that Houston could not overcome despite a late rally.

Early Inning Action

The game began with back-and-forth scoring in the first inning. Walker doubled to center for Houston, driving in Paredes to give the Astros an early 1-0 advantage. Washington responded immediately in the same frame as Mead doubled to center, allowing Wood to tie the game at 1-1. The Astros regained the lead in the second inning when Altuve homered 372 feet to left, bringing in Shewmake and Matthews to make it 4-1.

Washington answered in the third inning with a two-run barrage. Diaz homered 389 feet to left, scoring Smith to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Nationals took the lead later in the frame when Abrams homered 392 feet to right, scoring García Jr. and Mead to make it 6-4. However, Houston’s offense remained active, with García Jr. doubling to left to score Nuñez, and Mead singling to left to score Wood, pushing the score to 6-6 before the Astros’ fifth-inning explosion.

Pitching Performance

Washington starter Miles Mikolas earned the win, pitching six innings and allowing seven earned runs on nine hits. He struck out three batters and walked two, maintaining composure despite the high-scoring environment. Mike Burrows took the loss for Houston, working 4.1 innings and giving up seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out three.

Cole Henry pitched 1.2 innings for Washington, allowing four earned runs on three hits. Clayton Beeter secured the save with 1.1 perfect innings, striking out one batter. For Houston, AJ Blubaugh worked 1.2 innings with two earned runs, and Nate Pearson and Enyel De Los Santos each pitched one scoreless inning, combining for three strikeouts.

Final Outcomes

Houston managed to chip away at the deficit in the sixth inning when Smith scored on a groundout by Shewmake, making the score 7-12. In the eighth, Shewmake doubled to right, scoring Wade Jr., and Matthews homered 363 feet to left, scoring Diaz and Shewmake to bring the Astros within one run at 11-12. Washington’s defense held firm, preserving the one-run victory.

The final score was 12-11. The win improved Washington’s record to 47-45, while Houston fell to 45-48. The game was played at Nationals Park in Washington, District of Columbia, with an attendance of 11,092.
