Turning Point
James Wood’s grand slam in the fifth inning shifted the momentum entirely, providing the decisive spark that propelled the Washington Nationals to a 12-11 victory over the Houston Astros. The four-run blast, which traveled 446 feet to center field, capped a rapid scoring sequence that left the Astros’ bullpen unable to contain the offensive surge. Wood’s homer, which also scored Crews, Young, and Nuñez, turned a tight contest into a commanding lead that Houston could not overcome despite a late rally.
Early Inning Action
The game began with back-and-forth scoring in the first inning. Walker doubled to center for Houston, driving in Paredes to give the Astros an early 1-0 advantage. Washington responded immediately in the same frame as Mead doubled to center, allowing Wood to tie the game at 1-1. The Astros regained the lead in the second inning when Altuve homered 372 feet to left, bringing in Shewmake and Matthews to make it 4-1.
Washington answered in the third inning with a two-run barrage. Diaz homered 389 feet to left, scoring Smith to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Nationals took the lead later in the frame when Abrams homered 392 feet to right, scoring García Jr. and Mead to make it 6-4. However, Houston’s offense remained active, with García Jr. doubling to left to score Nuñez, and Mead singling to left to score Wood, pushing the score to 6-6 before the Astros’ fifth-inning explosion.
Pitching Performance
Washington starter Miles Mikolas earned the win, pitching six innings and allowing seven earned runs on nine hits. He struck out three batters and walked two, maintaining composure despite the high-scoring environment. Mike Burrows took the loss for Houston, working 4.1 innings and giving up seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out three.
