The Dallas Cowboys have signed veteran linebacker Von Miller, a native of DeSoto, TX, who previously indicated he was in talks with the team before training camp began. As Miller enters his 15th NFL season, he aims to strengthen the Cowboys' defense, particularly in pass protection, with a remarkable total of 138.5 career sacks, the highest among active players.
Miller's signing intensifies competition at the edge rusher position, potentially endangering the roster spots of multiple players. He is expected to primarily play as a left outside linebacker, a role that will be utilized during passing situations by defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
Currently, Rashan Gary, acquired in a trade earlier this year, holds the starting left outside linebacker position, while rookie Malachi Lawrence is also training there.
On the right side, Donovan Ezeiruaku, a second-year player, is anticipated to take on the right outside linebacker role, with James Houston expected to be a key rotational player. This scenario creates limited chances for Sam Williams and Marist Liufau, who are vying for the same position and must prove their worth to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.
Liufau may have trade value due to his potential as an inside linebacker with blitzing skills. The Cowboys are also considering players like Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Adedayo Odeleye, with 17 practice squad slots available for promising candidates.
